Wyoming Epilepsy Center Receives Certification 23 April 2008
Casper – April 23, 2008 – The goal of epilepsy treatment is freedom from seizures with minimal side effects and a positive outlook on life. To reach that goal, people with epilepsy can seek help from the Wyoming Epilepsy Center at Wyoming Medical Center. The Wyoming Epilepsy Center has been re-certified as a Level 3 center from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).
According to the NAEC, a specialized epilepsy center provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to people with epilepsy. The Wyoming Epilepsy Center is led by the only fellowship trained epileptologist in Wyoming, Dr. David Wheeler, MD, PhD; along with neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Sramek, MD; neuropsychologist Dr. Robert Burr, PhD; and certified EEG technologists. As the only Level 3 epilepsy center in the state, the Wyoming Epilepsy Center is equipped with a comprehensive neurodiagnostic laboratory, using the latest, state-of-the-art equipment.
"Epilepsy is a commonly misunderstood illness that can be easily misdiagnosed," says Dr. Wheeler. "By being recognized as a specialized epilepsy center, Wyoming Epilepsy Center has proven expertise, qualification and dedication to patients to provide accurate diagnoses and best treatment options possible."
Epilepsy is defined as more one unprovoked seizure and there are many different causes. It is the third most common neurological disorder affecting more than 5,000 Wyomingites. Seizures can be controlled using various treatments, most often with medications, but sometimes surgery may be considered.
